Professional Development

CO-OPS aims to provide a number of training programs on a regular basis. These professional development opportunities will be provided both online and face-to-face. The sessions will be provided by leading researchers and program practitioners and will provide skill development opportunities on such topics as the use and critique of evidence, evaluation and balancing innovation with the prevention of risk. Keep an eye out for upcoming sessions via the training calendar on this website.

Links are also provided for information about other training opportunities offered online or in person by organisations other than CO-OPS, which may be of interest to our network members. The CO-OPS Collaboration Secretariat is unable to offer any warranties about the content or quality of these training opportunities.

CO-OPS National Workshop, Sydney Hilton, October 20 & 21 2010

This October will see the year's largest gathering of obesity prevention workers and researchers in Australasia. Over 400 practitioners and researchers will come together for the first time at the CO-OPS National Workshop, the ANZOS (Australia and New Zealand Obesity Society) national conference and ACAORN (Australasian Child and Adolescent Obesity Research Network) annual meeting from October 20-23.

Obesity Prevention 5-day Short Course

The Deakin University WHO Collaborating Centre for Obesity Prevention/CO-OPS Collaboration 'Obesity Prevention Short Course' was held from the 28th June to the 2nd July 2010 in Geelong. 

This course is generally run once per year in Geelong during June / July.

Information about the course - June/July 2010

The course is designed for managers and practitioners working in physical activity and/or nutrition promotion including staff from the fields of health promotion, community health and public health; and for GPs, dietitians, nurses, teachers, physical activity practitioners, government staff and others working/interested in the area of physical activity, nutrition and the promotion of healthy weight in communities.

The focus of the course is obesity prevention in young populations i.e. birth - 18 years. It uses a population health approach.
The course provides:

  • a fundamental understanding of the obesity epidemic and its impact
  • the evidence base for obesity prevention
  • best practice principles for obesity prevention initiatives
  • frameworks for understanding the determinants of obesity & strategies for action

Local significant childhood community-based projects will be showcased by staff working on these projects with the opportunity to discover the realities of planning, implementing and evaluating such projects including building capacity and social marketing.

The course includes:

  • Comprehensive manual,
  • A copy of all presentations
  • Pre-course readings
  • All refreshments and lunch for 5 days
